Malvern Residence I

Exemplar of Studio Tate’s highly intelligent approach and desire for liveability, Malvern Residence is a collaborative reimagining that marries consideration for the home’s occupants with functional, well designed zones for practical yet refined family living.

Leading the project, Studio Tate curated a working-group of consultants that included architect and builder S&K Group, introducing the first time client to an enlightening, collaborative process. Tasked with opening up the existing home to create seamless flow between old and new, maximise light and incorporate individualised zones, spatial layout was a key design consideration – with a number of iterations ensuring an end result that delights, functionally and aesthetically.

A robust fit out and durable finishes were thoughtfully considered and enlivened with playful accents. Tonal grey and white acts as a canvas for bold materiality and grounds spaces flooded with light by new skylights installed in the kitchen, butlers pantry and ensuite; the celebration of light a recurring theme throughout.

The moody elegance and distinctly adult feel of the front sitting room entices a welcoming retreat. A rich colour palette is tempered with cornice detail, gold accents and tactile materiality. Dark blue walls are paired with spotted high pile carpet in the same hue, playing to the regal coloured tiling on the existing fireplace, itself revived by a new dark timber mantle.

Considered attention to design detail elevates the bathroom spaces. A shower threshold in dark Montecarlo terrazzo mottled with earthy pops of colour is offset by grey ceramic gloss tiles that ripple with organic texture, while custom mirror cabinets are crowned by feature lighting.

Floodlit with natural light, bold insertions of terrazzo and dark timber veneer draw focus in the generous living spaces, paired back to a neutral palette they ground the airy space. Mottled glass cabinetry softens the kitchen’s monochromatic palette and reflects sliding doors that open up to marry inside and out with a luxurious alfresco dining and pool area for complete family enjoyment.

The master suite employs a neutral palette with muted accents that, while
nodding to the sumptuousness of the sitting room, invoke a contrasting lightness that is calming and restorative. With re-zoning resulting in a transition of the master suite from one side of the home to other, a walk in robe and ensuite were made possible without compromising generous bedrooms for the children.
